Skeet Range Opens!
Below is a letter to the membership from President Terry Toomey regarding the new KSC Skeet Range.

Dear Members,
Through the efforts of Rick Olivo and Terry Toomey, with the aid of Glenn Wallace (Boy Scouts), Peter Burke (4-H), Jo Ann Mink (Women in Shooting), two grants totaling $5200.00 were received from the Friends of the NRA Grant Program.
This money, earmarked for our new skeet range, was used to pay for two trap machines for that range ($4800.00).
About a year ago a skeet committee started looking for a good site to put our range. It took about a month to mark and measure and finally come up with the perfect spot.
Vice President Dave Newkirk, Peter Burke and I started clearing trees. We rented a dozer and pulled stumps with the help of Shawn Williams and Dennis Walker. Debbie Newkirk fed and kept us supplied with drinks.
The spot we picked was on a side hill with a flat spot and another hill. It was hard to judge the grade because of so many angles. I guesstimated about 150 to 180 yards of fill to level out the range. Other estimates were lower. We put over 300 yards of crushed slate, from the other ranges, into the site With rented back-hoe and dozer Preston Stiffler, Jake Kuhnen, Dennis Walker, Dave Newkirk and I put in a long weekend hauling and grading. Preston borrowed a friends back-hoe and jake a dump truck. We thought we had it pretty level.
Shooting trap one Sunday, member Sylvester Braswell, an engineer, offered his services to help lay out the range. To his credit, Syl is a perfectionist when it comes to making and grading a site. “I think you’re a little high on the far end,” he said.
I built the form boxes for the house’s and pads and we put them in the appropriate spots. Then we started measuring and re-measuring. Up 16 inches, up 19inches, up 23 inches…holly crap, we were off almost two feet!
Bill Deily and his trusty old tractor with bucket and york rake attached, put in a couple of full days regarding the site. Thanks to Charlie Brown for hauling the tractor back and forth a couple of times.
Edson Folmsbee donated two steel doors and some windows with a savings to the club of at least $600.00. Thanks Ed!
Hugh Baillargeon and I started prefabing the walls of the low house under the pavilion.
The forms were finally set in place and cement was poured. Dave, Hugh and I spent the day screeding and troweling and then covered it with plastic for a 28 day cure. We put bolts in for the sill plates in case we ever have to move the houses.
We brought down the “Pre-Fabs’ and started putting them together with the help of Peter Burke, Bruce Charbonneau and Dennis Walker. The photos on the site are of Bruce, Dave and I.
Low house built and high house underway, I get a call from Kathy Grossman. Her neighbor has some white stain for sale at $10 a gallon. “Buy all you can,” I told her. She could only get four gallons and insisted on paying for it and putting it on…Okay Kathy!! That was all the investigating I needed for a proposed member, you’re in , kid! Tom Price got Joe Hallenback’s chipper and cleaned up.
Construction is almost done as of this writing. Just a little trim and the handrails for the high house stairway remain.
Dennis Walkler’s dad offered to do the final grading of the 20 yards of topsoil we got through Tom June’s boss at Kinderhook Toyota. I bought a bag of grass seed and can get some hat to cover it with. Kathy and Armand Beaudy are putting a coat of paint on this week.
We will have the Grand Opening during the Open House weekend, September 20 and 21. I am hoping to see as many members as can make it to see the new range.
Syl calls it the rainy rain range because every day we worked on it, it rained.
We have been shooting on the new skeet range for over a month. The machines are working beautifully and we get new shooters every week.
I think I included everyone who helped on this project. If I missed anyone, please let me know.
Oh, by the way, I had 4-H kids on the range and three out of the five shot better than me.
Yours in sportsmanship,
Terry Toomey,
President, KSC

Wise Words
During this political season let's be reminded of these wise words:
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could, and should, do for themselves.
~ Abraham Lincoln
Quote of the Week - maybe the Century
"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it."
-- Barack Obama
BEST COMEBACK RESPONSE OF THE YEAR
If you ever testify in court, you might wish you could have been as sharp as this policeman. He was being cross-examined by a defense attorney during a felony trial. The lawyer was trying to undermine the police officer's credibility...
Q: 'Officer -- did you see my client fleeing the scene?
A: 'No sir. But I subsequently observed a person matching the description of the offender, running several blocks away.'
Q: 'Officer -- who provided this description?'
A: 'The officer who responded to the scene."
Q: A fellow officer provided the description of this so called offender.
Do you trust your fellow officers?
'A: 'Yes, sir. With my life.'
Q: 'With your life? Let me ask you this then officer.
Do you have a room where you change your clothes in preparation for your daily duties?'
A: 'Yes sir, we do!'
Q: 'And do you have a locker in the room?'
A: 'Yes sir, I do.
Q: 'And do you have a lock on your locker?'
A: 'Yes sir.'
Q: 'So let me ask you this, you trust your fellow officers with your life, but you find it necessary to lock your locker in a room you share with these same officers?'
A: 'You see, sir -- we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room.'
The courtroom EXPLODED with laughter, and a prompt recess was called.
Compared with Gasoline
Think a gallon of gas is expensive? This sorta puts it all into perspective. Below are some everyday products we purchase and what they would cost if we bought them by the gallon.
| Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 |
$10.32 per gallon |
| Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 |
$9.52 per gallon |
| Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 |
$10.17 per gallon |
| Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 |
$10.00 per gallon |
| Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 |
$33.60 per gallon |
| Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 |
$178.13 per gallon |
| Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 |
$123.20 per gallon |
| Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 |
$25.42 per gallon |
| Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 |
$84.48 per gallon |
| And this is the REAL KICKER |
|
Evian water 9 oz $1.49
|
$21.19 per gallon! |
| Remember, Evian spelled backwards is Naive. |
|
Ever wonder why computer printers are so cheap? Ink. If you bought the ink for your printer gy the gallon it would cost: $5,200 a gal.
So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink!
Just a little humor to help ease the pain of your next trip to the pump.
Making Sense of Capitol Hill Double Speak
“There is something profoundly wrong—something that should trouble all of us—when we have elected Democratic officials who seem more worried about how the Bush administration might respond to Iran’s murder of our troops, than about the fact that Iran is murdering our troops.”
~ Sen. Joe Lieberman
Theodore Roosevelt's Ideas on Immigrants
and Being an AMERICAN in 1907

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an e exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Winston Churchill on Islam - in 1899!
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!
Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.
A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.
The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.
No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."
-Sir Winston Churchill (The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).
God & Government
"That wise Men have in all Ages thought Government necessary for the Good of Mankind; and, that wise Governments have always thought Religion necessary for the well ordering and well-being of Society, and accordingly have been ever careful to encourage and protect the Ministers of it, paying them the highest publick Honours, that their Doctrines might thereby meet with the greater Respect among the common People."
~ Benjamin Franklin (On that Odd Letter of the Drum, April 1730)
Quotes of the Month
"History does not entrust the care of freedom to the weak or timid."
~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
“It has been said that all Government is an evil. It would be more proper to say that the necessity of any Government is a misfortune. This necessity however exists; and the problem to be solved is, not what form of Government is perfect, but which of the forms is least imperfect.”
~ James Madison
"Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."
~ Thomas Jefferson
